Welly Meets Carvetii Coffee

Angharad Macdonald and fiancé Gareth Kemble know a thing or two about coffee.  I met the founders of Carvetii Coffee over a cup of the proverbial last week in their new business unit in the pretty village of Threlkeld just off the A66.  Both Angharad and Gareth are passionate about the production of their ‘speciality’ coffee and the knowledge associated with it.  Named after an ancient Celtic tribe from the Eden Valley, Carvetii exemplifies the quality associated with ‘speciality’ coffee which is quite simply a cut above regular commercial-grade coffee normally drunk at the usual high street coffee chains. The difference with a speciality blend is both the quality of the bean and the whole process of harvesting.  Angharad describes how the speciality bean is actually really the seed from the ripe coffee cherries, graded to a higher level than most regular beans.  Hand-picked from a crop grown specifically at an altitude of 1000 metres or higher with natural shade from hillside forests, speciality-graded coffee is meticulously checked for bad beans with pickers paid a higher rate for quality beans; so it’s all very ethical too.  Carvetii choose a variety of seasonal beans which offer a range of combinations across countries, soils and harvesting methods to ensure that the end result is a unique, quality cup of coffee.

A member of the Speciality Coffee Association, Angharad and Gareth now have over 80 business customers throughout Cumbria and employ two others to help with the workload.  But it’s not just about selling coffee.  Both Angharad and Gareth are passionate about the education of coffee, keen to ensure that café staff are trained to offer the best cup of coffee and above all to understand so much more about coffee, its grading and provenance.  With a strong customer base, their next aim is to expand through education, offering training courses on site here in Threlkeld.

So next time you’re out and about and fancy stopping for a coffee, make sure you try a cup of Carvetii.  Check out their ever-increasing list of Carvetii purveyors here.
