The Lakes Distillery: Damson & Sloe Gins
The Lakes Distillery have launched a fabulous gift for the sweet-toothed gin lover. Priced at £30, this gift-boxed duo of Sloe and Damson Gins looks too good to drink… but I’m sure you’ll manage. The Sloe gin is a herbally mix of citrus, almond and festive cinnamon whilst the Damson offers a fruitier alternative with a spicy kick. Cute little 20cl bottles in two gorgeous colours – perfect for a tipple or two after dinner on Christmas Day.

Kendal Mint Cake & Lakes Gingerbread Vodka
David Hall knows a thing or two about booze… or at least serving it across his bar in The Punchb
Bowl at Barrows Green just outside Kendal. When he took over as licensee, so the story goes, he found an old recipe from the mid nineteenth century for a mint vodka-blended drink…. and waderyaknow, he only went out and created his own similar version.
Today David is distilling both his Mint Cake and Gingerbread Vodkas from the pub itself and so far he’s been doing a roaring trade. I’d tasted the Mint Cake Vodka before but the Gingerbread variety was a first for me. Rather than just tasting solely of ginger, it’s got a real bready, flavour – you can almost taste gingerbread fresh out of the oven. Both are sweet of course and make for a perfect after-dinner drink. My personal fave has got to be the Gingerbread Vodka.

Shed 1 Distillery
Possibly the smallest gin distillery in the UK, Shed 1 was launched just three months ago by former Shakespearean actor Andrew Arnold-Bennett, quite literally in the shed at the bottom of his garden in Ulverston… not for much longer though. With an increasing number of fans throughout Cumbria and beyond, including The Forest Side in Grasmere, Andrew’s two flagship flavours, Cuckold’s Revenge and Giggle in the Ginnel are selling out fast.
He’s just launched his Festive Tipple in time for Christmas which tastes fabulous (yes not much left in these bottles shown after their photo shoot…!). A blend of glacé cherries, orange and lemon zests, allspice, cloves and cinnamon, Andrew recommends that his gin be sipped neat or drunk with non-flavoured tonic – beware the former as at 43% proof, this tipple is definitely not one for glugging!

Totty & Co Gin & Vodka by
The Hawkshead Relish Company
Try a snifter of posh totty this Christmas with The Hawkshead Relish Company’s boozy addition to their array of jams and chutneys. Named after owner Mark Whitehead’s home town of Tottingham, I tried their Pink Grapefruit & Ginger Gin and Chilli, Lime & Ginger Vodka. At 20% proof the pink grapefruit gin is perfect on its own without the addition of tonic and the after-burn of chilli taste in the vodka was surprisingly good!

Kin Toffee Vodka
This smooth blend of vodka and caramel will certainly warm your festive cockles this Christmas and at 20.3% proof, it will go easy on your head too (unless you drink the entire bottle of course). Based in Newby Bridge, Judith Kin has amassed a dedicated following of toffee-obsessed imbibers and now sells her Lake District vodka up and down the country. If you’ve not got a massive sweet-tooth this is a great dessert-replacer!
