Carvetii Coffee Limited was formed in 2011 and is the brainchild of Angharad and Gareth. Having spent a number of years working in both the hospitality and education sectors, Angharad and Gareth applied their considerable skill set to opening a coffee roaster with the intention of supplying speciality coffee to establishments across Cumbria, and the UK as a whole.
Carvetii Coffee Roasters is situated within the village of Threlkeld, within the Lake District National Park. Sales from the Roastery are purely wholesale, but a retail website also exists, allowing members of the public to mail order their coffee: www.carvetiicoffee.co.uk
The Roastery is split between a roasting and packaging area, and a well-equipped training area. All new customers are encouraged to follow our training programme, which takes place initially at the Roastery with follow-up support back on site.
Carvetii source their coffee through various brokers, who are based in the UK for part of the year but also spend time visiting the various farms and mills who produce the green coffee beans. Carvetii have a policy of only purchasing speciality grade green beans which ensures the farmers are paid a sustainable price for their product.
Harvests take place in countries at different times of the year and Carvetii have a policy of sourcing fresh crop coffees, ensuring that the green coffee beans are used within 12 months of being harvested.
The Carvetii roasting style aims to harness the origin characteristics and flavours of each coffee; this can be described as light to medium roasting. This produces coffees with exciting and interesting flavours, which are sweeter and smoother to drink.
Coffee is roasted fresh to order and delivered weekly; each bag carries its ‘roasted on’ date, as well as details of the origins of each coffee. As well as coffee, Carvetii distribute a range of ancillary goods, including teas and single origin hot chocolates. Recently branded ceramic and takeaway cups have been added to the range of products on offer.
Carvetii are distributors for La Spaziale and Victoria Arduino espresso machines, as well as Mahlkonig and Anfim grinders. In addition filter brewing equipment is offered from Bunn and Marco. All equipment sales include installation, and espresso machine sales are backed-up with a two year parts and service contract.
Carvetii take their community involvement seriously and have committed a lot of time and energy to supporting local causes. In the past they have raised around £5,000 which has been shared between Eden Valley Hospice, Project Waterfall and the Melanoma Fund.
