I’ve walked past this shop several times without ever stopping to go in for a browse usually because I’ve been dashing off somewhere with no time to stop. Today however I decided to pop in and have a mooch around, if only to gather a few ideas for Christmas presents (yes – I’ve decided that this year I will be organised rather than leaving everything to the last minute).
Simply furnished with old trestle tables displaying white packages of tempting smellies from soaps to bath bombs and candles, Cheryl McPherson has created an oasis of calm. The rustic feel and simplicity of her branding proudly displaying its Cumbrian provenance is bang on trend yet still unique and inviting – definitely a #wellycool discovery.
There’s not even a sniff of mass-manufacturing here – all products are hand made by Cheryl in her spare time – that is when she’s not manning the shop and dealing with online deliveries. She’s one very busy lady and usually up by 5am to get creating before she opens shop. Only natural products are used in the creation of Agnes & Cat smellies, which is probably why the fragrances emanating from the shelves are so divine.
I’m a bit of a candle fiend and have been known to drop several £s in the direction of an expensive high street brand. Often very disappointed by the uneven burn of some of the candles I’ve bought given the amount of money I’ve parted with in pursuit of glorious home aromas, Cheryl assures me that even expensive mass manufactured candles will use cheap wax and rubbish wicks. She uses only soy wax when hand-pouring her candles. Not only is it better for the planet she says but it also provides a much cleaner burn for your candle… and the special wick she describes is the key to the perfect flame. I have yet to test out her theory as she has invited me back to try one of her Christmas candles next week. Obviously not going to say no to that one. No White Company for me this year – I’m keeping it hand-made and real in Cumbria (with a few pounds left in my purse).
As for her bath bombs and soaps, as you would expect all are paraben and sls free. I tried one last night and I have to say, it most definitely left my skin soft and glowing – maybe not 10 years younger but definitely feeling healthier and ultimately super-relaxed after a soak in the tub surrounded by heavenly fragrances of jasmine.
Price-wise, all of Cheryl’s products are perfect stocking fillers. Her Jam Jar candles are a reasonable £11.99 with the slightly smaller tin candles priced at £9.99. As for her ‘melts’ it’s time to dump the Yankee brand and try the Agnes & Cat variety. With names as heavenly as the scents, try Dolly Blue or Seasalt and Moss for an invigorating aroma throughout your home. At just £6 per packet it’s hard to believe the quality of fragrance that you get for your money. I tried the White Fig – a simply divine scent that filled my bathroom just before a relaxing bath bomb soak.
If you can’t get down to Windermere any time soon, get shopping online at agnesandcat.com. For those of you willing to cross the border into (whispers) Yorkshire, you’ll find Cheryl and her array of scented goods at the fabulous Country Life Christmas market in Harrogate from the 2nd to the 4th of December. But be quick as she completely sells out before Christmas and shuts up shop throughout January for a well-earned break. Thank you Cheryl for showing me your wonderful products. Made in Cumbria and most definitely #wellycool.
