Focusing on South Cumbria, Wellies & Wine picks out 5 of the best bars. Whether choosing a relaxing pre-dinner glass of wine or settling in for a cocktail or two, here’s our pick of the crop south of the county:
1. The Lamplighter Dining Rooms, Windermere
Starting our round-up of Cumbria bars and officially the closest bar in Windermere to the main train station, The Lamplighter Dining Rooms was founded by Tony and Sue Tasker 25 years ago. Now run by their two sons James and Alistair, the lounge bar can seat up to 100 guests and is open throughout the day where customers can enjoy full Cumbrian breakfasts, classic bar favourites and sharing platters as well as signature cocktails, real ale and an on-trend large selection of rare and speciality gins.

2. Paloma’s, Kendal
A relatively new arrival to the up-and-coming bar scene in the market town of Kendal, Paloma’s is a fabulous art deco experience with banquet seating downstairs and a more intimate area upstairs. This place knows a thing or two about cocktails and prides itself on its extensive menu, offering weird and wonderful delights all decadently presented. Try the special – Paloma’s Horticultural Society (P.H.S.), which includes the house-infused sugar snap gin, grapes, pear purée and bitters – delicious!

3. The Royal Hotel, Kirkby Lonsdale
This restored Georgian town-house hotel provides luxury accommodation and a fabulous bar open to non-residents. Grand and majestic, this roomy bar is a fabulous place to enjoy an artisan G and T or glass of fizz – their selection of local ales is also top notch. The decor is 19th century tropical and resonant of the British Empire. Laid-back rattan chairs, decadent globe chandeliers and huge house plants in oversized urns give it a luxurious feel. A perfect location for pre-dinner drinks in a fabulously relaxed setting.

4. Slate Bar, Kendal
A Welly favourite, Slate Bar is serious about gin and cocktails featuring well, gin of course. Cute and bijoux this little bar is tucked away down Wainwright’s Yard and offers customers an intimate experience in the heart of Kendal. Try speciality gins such as the Warner Edwards Rhubarb or Gin Mare from Barcelona and grab a bite to eat at the same time – their cold meat platters are fabulous. Check out our in-depth review here.

5. Mason’s Yard 24, Kendal
It’s all happening in Cumbria’s busy market town of Kendal! After a huge refurb, Kendal’s lastest swanky bar/pub addition opened late last year and has a great success. The decor is modern and light and very enticing after a busy day’s shopping. Head over to Mason’s Yard 24 for a mid-week glass of vino with the girls – their aptly-named ‘Wine on Wednesday’ offers drinkers a large glass of Merlot or Chilean Sauv Blanc at just £3.95… lethal for Thursday mornings though 😉
